Good news! For passports, physical police verification will not be needed in 12 months, says Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi
The Narendra Modi government is, therefore, planning to bring an end to the physical police verification by replacing it with a connection to the robust national database of crimes and criminals that will keep a track of the background of a passport applicant.
The physical police verification for passports is one cumbersome thing which everyone wants to avoid. The Narendra Modi government is, therefore, planning to bring an end to the physical police verification by replacing it with a connection to the robust national database of crimes and criminals that will keep a track of the background of a passport applicant. According to PTI, Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi said the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems Project (CCTNS) will connect with the passport service of the Ministry of External Affairs and in a year it is expected to replace the physical verification with the online one.
Rajiv Mehrishi told reporters, ” Police in some states are already using CCTNS for passport credentials. Police will be given hand-held devices to go to an applicant’s address and his or her details will be uploaded with the network. It will minimise contact with police and reduce time.” Home Minister Rajnath Singh launched a digital portal under the CCTNS project which aims to create a national database of criminals and also connect 15,398 police stations in the country with each other. During this event, Mehrishi took the opportunity to make the announcement of governments plan to digitalize physical police verification.
Given the present state when the databases are so vulnerable to hacking, the home secretary was asked about its safety. Replying to this query he said that the possibility of hacking is always there but special measures are being taken to get it protected and the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre has been roped in for the task. Along with the aforementioned facility, the digital police portal will also provide the citizens with the facility to register a complaint online and request for antecedent verification.
